For those looking for an adventure truly off the beaten path, you can't go wrong with a trek along the vast network of narrow passageways, chambers, and interconnected tunnels of the Cagliari Underground, which showcases life in the city from the 3rd century BC through the 6th century AD. Illuminated by candles, the dim lighting adds to your eerie surroundings. Begin your look at this hidden history with an orientation drive past the Basilica of Bonaria and Monte Urpino with a photo stop boasting an unforgettable panoramic setting. Back on the coach you'll continue along Poetto Beach, home of pink flamingos, to the Cagliari Underground. Once inside, you'll see The Gallery, used as a shelter during WWII; St. Restituta Crypt, a stunning example of late-Roman and Byzantine architecture; and the Archaeological area of Sant'Eulalia, home to 4th century BC ruins. Back above ground, enjoy a typical Sardinia lunch.
Special Notes:
Note: This tour involves a considerable amount of walking on uneven terrain with steps and a flight of stairs, and it is not recommended to guests with walking difficulties or suffering from claustrophobia. The temperature underground is actually quite stable so you will find it is warmer than the temperature above ground during the winter months, and colder during the summer months. You may need to bring along a light sweater. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Not recommended for wheelchair users.Details
