Explore Sardinia's most important archaeological site-the megalithic complex of Su Nuraxi. Situated in the center of Sardinia adjacent to the small town of Barumini, the UNESCO World Heritage Site stands on a small plateau at a level of about 754 feet. Built by the Nuragic civilization during the Bronze Age between the 11th and 9th centuries B.C., many of the ruins you see today date to the 6th and 7th centuries B.C. While archeologists aren't sure as to their significance, the beehive-looking buildings could have been used as religious temples, meeting halls or military strongholds. These mysterious stone buildings known as "nuraghi" aren't found anywhere else on the planet. The guided tour takes you through the maze-like village of 30 beehive shaped towers, some with multiple levels and separate rooms. The Nuraxi tower, the oldest part of the complex, originally rose to a height of 61 feet and had three floors.
