What you will visit:
Gulangyu Island
A unique island off the coast of Xiamen, pedestrian-only Gulangyu Island is a recently designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is smaller than one square mile, so exploration of the entirety of the island's delights is possible. Gulangyu got its name from the sound of the pounding surf against the surrounding reef. 'Gu' in Chinese means drum, and 'lang' means waves. With approximately 20,000 permanent residents, the charming resort-like atmosphere is enhanced by bright flowers, lush trees and striking European-style architecture-signature features that put Gulangyu Island on China's list of National Scenic Spots.
What you will see along the way:
The 1842 Treaty of Nanking made Gulangyu a treaty port, and 14 countries set up settlements there as a result. The eclectic mix of different cultures, combined with a variety of Eastern and Western architecture, give a distinct colonial flair to the island. Buildings dating back to the 19th century line the white, sandy beaches. The lack of vehicle traffic gives Gulangyu a laid-back feeling, and artists converge here for the inspiring scenery. Key attractions include Dafudi, the private residence of a Chinese high-ranking civil official in ancient times (Dafu means official's rank; di means residence), and the Owl Building, the former site of the Asiatic Petroleum Company (APC) and an architectural structure of beauty and calm.
