The quaint town of Visby, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is ringed by a 13th-century limestone wall, encasing the best-preserved medieval city in Scandinavia. A four-hour adventure encompassing many of its highlights begins with a motorcoach drive to a former gallows site. Then, embark on a walking tour of Visby, crossing through the eastern side en route to the Dalmansporten gate. Head down narrow streets to the 13th-century St. Mary Cathedral, still in use today. Pass through the old Hanseatic harbor at Almedalen to see the oldest remaining structure in Visby, then reboard your motorcoach for a panoramic drive through the agricultural district to photograph the rural medieval churches that dot the landscape. Continue to Gnisvärd, a picturesque old fishing village, and see the unusual Gnisvärd boat shaped graves, dating from the Bronze Age (about 600 BC). Return to port after this lovely and informative day.
Special Notes:
Participants will encounter cobblestone streets in Visby and some uneven terrain elsewhere. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Tour requires approximately one hour and 30 minutes of walking. The medieval church and the St Mary's Church can close on short notice. In this case, the visit will be from outside only.Details
