Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands
The British Virgin Islands including Virgin Gorda were discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493. The silhouette of the island reminded Columbus of a rotund and reclining woman, hence the name Virgin Gorda, which translated means "Fat Virgin." Virgin Gorda is the third-largest island in the BVI's and covers an area of approximately eight-square miles. Unlike Tortola, the capital of the BVI's, Virgin Gorda is all about a slower pace of life and most activities center around "The Baths," sailing, snorkeling and beautiful beaches. The most popular destination without a doubt is the world-famous Baths which were formed eons ago when geologic forces pushed huge granite boulders to the surface and on to the shoreline. Today the smooth rocks, many piled one on top of another, form picturesque grottos, caverns, and hidden pools to explore. There are also two beautiful beaches at The Baths and the snorkeling is said to be wonderful.
Note: Virgin Gorda is an anchorage port; guests transfer to shore via ship's tenders.
In ports where guests utilize tender boats to go ashore, Princess staff will make every effort to assist but are not allowed to individually physically lift more than 50 lbs. (22kg). Guests requiring physical assistance must travel with an able-bodied companion. With your safety and comfort in mind, the final decision to permit or prohibit passengers from going ashore will be made on each occasion by the ship's Captain.
