Description

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

The region known as Galicia is blessed with mountainous forests of pine and eucalyptus, sandy beaches, and a rocky 700-mile coastline that harbors quaint fishing villages whose fleets haul in an abundance of seafood of all shapes and sizes, particularly the popular Galician mussel, known locally as "mejillones." And its interior is home to farms that raise beef, pigs and an abundance of vegetables.

Experience Galicia's bounty by land and sea during a full-day excursion that begins with appetizers on a catamaran ride around the Bay of Vigo and ends with lunch in the medieval village of Bayona.

Your culinary adventure begins at the pier where you'll board your catamaran. After your captain casts off you'll slowly make your way out of the harbor and into the Bay of Vigo as the soothing sea breezes gently caress your face. As you stand out on deck looking over the serene waters it may be hard to believe that it was the scene of a fierce battle. In 1702 during the War of the Spanish Succession, a fleet of Franco-Spanish ships, escorting galleons loaded with American gold and precious stones, was destroyed by powerful British and Dutch warships. And, it's believed that much of the treasure sits at the bottom of the bay.

But treasure of another sort lives beneath the waves-mussels. During your cruise you'll be able to see a typical Galician mussel bed and how mussel farmers utilize a variety of techniques for growing these tasty mollusks.

As you watch the coastline drift by indulge in a sampling of mussels accompanied by a large savory pie that is usually filled with meat or tuna fish, red peppers, tomato and onion called a Galician salty pie. A glass of local Albariño white wine completes the beginning of your day.

Once your boat moors in Bayona you'll walk to the Parador Conde de Gondomar-a medieval fortress built atop a rocky promontory. It was here that the first ships arrived in Europe to tell the Europeans of Columbus's discovery of America in 1492. (A replica of the ship, Pinta, has a permanent home in the harbor.)

Now a renowned resort, the fortress is a perfect setting for your lunch. After you enter the dining room the chef will discuss the meal's three courses while your guide provides commentary.

At the conclusion of your meal you'll have free time to wander around the town or do a little shopping before rejoining your catamaran for the cruise back to Vigo.
