WHAT YOU VISIT
Ise-jingu Shrine Complex
Dating back to the 7th century, the religious complex is home to 120 buildings made of solid cypress wood and use no nails but instead joined wood. After crossing the wooden bridge, you'll pass through a Tori gate to the Inner Shrine. Known as Naiku, it's dedicated to the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu, one of the most revered Shinto deities and, according to legend, Japan's emperors are her direct descendants. Geku, or Outer Shrine, is dedicated to the god of agriculture, rice harvest and industry. If you wish to make an offering, toss your coin into the alcove or offertory box. Bow deeply twice. Clap your hands together at chest height twice. Bow your head slightly, with your hands together and eyes closed. When complete, bow deeply once again.

Mikimoto Pearl Island
Nestled in Ise Bay, the island is known as the birthplace of culture pearl aquaculture. In 1892, local pearl farmer and merchant Kokichi Mikimoto made a groundbreaking invention when he discovered a way to culture perfectly round pearls. At the Pearl Museum, you can learn about his life and follow the growth of a pearl from the moment the shell is surgically implanted to the time it's harvested. You can also catch Ama, traditional women divers in white outfits, in live action as they demonstrate how they dive into the sea to harvest pearl oysters.
