Points of Interest

  • Great Bernera
Moderate activity

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

The Great Bernera Island may only measure roughly 8 kilometres (5 miles) long by 3 kilometres (2 miles) wide, but it proves that big surprises come in little packages. Linked to the Isle of Lewis by a road bridge, the island's northern tip is home to the charming settlement of Bostadh. From Stornoway, you'll travel through the moorland across the 121-meter (400 feet) strait and admire the quaint fishing villages, stone dykes and wild landscape as you make your way to Bostadh Beach. Here, you can stretch your legs and soak up the views of beautiful beaches and spectacular coastal scenery. Nearby sits the famed Iron Age Village of Bostadh, an excavated site of a 1,500-year-old Norse settlement. After visiting the excavated remains and replica of an Iron Age house, you'll depart for the main village of Breacleit for time on your own.
