Your excursion begins at the pier as you are taken on a narrated drive through the city and sights of St. John's. Discover a delightful mix of colorful wooden houses, solid stone churches and dramatic modern structures. The city's history began in 1497 when it was the summer home to Europe's fishing fleets, and in the 1700s it became a permanent settlement of British colonials. You'll pass by these marvelous colonial buildings, stopping for a photo opportunity at the Commissariat House, Government House and Garrison Church, all representative of the British colonial days of St. John's from the 1800s.
Get your photo taken at the birthplace of the British Empire. We'll pause on North America's first street and see where Sir Humphrey Gilbert staked England's claim to the New World in 1583. You'll visit historic Signal Hill. Located at the headland of St. John's Harbour, Signal Hill was used to defend the city from seaward attack. It's also the site where Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless signal. From here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city, harbor and surrounding sea and explore the visitor center at Cabot Tower, which was built to commemorate John Cabot's voyage of discovery. You'll also see the National Historic Church. Learn about the struggles some of the first New-World settlers faced as you stroll through the chapel and view the magnificent stone architecture and stained glass.
