Your excursion begins at the pier as you are transported along the coast on a scenic drive to visit Cape Spear and its historic lighthouse. Built in 1834, Cape Spear is Newfoundland's oldest surviving coastal lighthouse. The two-story wooden structure served as a beacon for the guidance and safety of mariners up until 1955. Located on a rocky promontory jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean, the lighthouse sits on the most easterly point in North America. Enjoy some free time to relax and enjoy the dramatic seascapes, visit the lighthouse or stop by the small visitor's centre to shop for souvenirs.
Upon returning to St. John's, enjoy a drive through this historic city, featuring a blending of old and new, of colorful wooden houses, sacred stone churches and striking modern structures. You'll pass by the Romanesque Basilica of St. John the Baptist and the British-colonial buildings of the Government House and St. Thomas Old Garrison Church. You'll visit historic Signal Hill. Located at the headland of St. John's Harbour, Signal Hill is the site of Cabot Tower which was built to commemorate the 400th anniversary of John Cabot's voyage of discovery. It is also the site where Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless signal. From here you will be able to get a panoramic view of the city, harbor and surrounding sea.
