Enjoy a three-and-half hour excursion to a number of picturesque spots around Lustrafjord. Your journey takes you on a ride down the Romantic Road to the quaint village of Urnes. Of the original approximately 1,000 stave churches constructed across Norway, only 28 remain. And the Urnes Stave Church is the oldest and most highly decorated of them all, and is the only one to be recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in 1130, the church you see today is actually the third church built on this spot. Outside, you'll see the typical high-rising turrets and sloped roofs. Inside, is a tribute to Viking pagan art with carvings adorning two door panels and the northern wall. For your return trip to Skjolden, you'll ferry to the other side of the fjord and board a motorcoach for a scenic tour of the villages residing on the western side.
Special Notes:
Wear non-skid shoes due to walking over uneven terrain, inclines and some steps.Dress warmly in layers with a wind- and waterproof outer layer. No photography permitted inside the church.
