- Ruins of Segesta
Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.
History buffs will thrill to the opportunity to explore the archaeological complex of Segesta. A one-hour motorcoach ride from Palermo brings you to Segesta, an important classical town. Here, the Greeks integrated with the indigenous Elymian people, and later, the Romans ruled. In the 13th century, it was abandoned. A guided walking tour introduces you first to the Greek temple. With 36 Doric columns built out of a golden stone, this excellent example of Greek architecture is missing a roof due to an attack on the settlement during construction. Next, a strenuous uphill walk takes you to a circular amphitheater on a mountaintop with breathtaking views of the valley. This Greek theater, which can hold 4,000 patrons, is set against the natural backdrop of sea and sky. In addition to these significant monuments, there are ruins of a small church, a mosque and a Norman castle. Relax on your scenic drive to port.
