Sibenik's fortresses are the most popular attractions in the city. Once part of a unique defense system, today, these monuments have been revitalized as cultural attractions and are recognized throughout Europe for their heritage and contemporary rebirth. First on the itinerary is Barone Fortress. Erected in 1646 on an 80-meter-high (262 feet) hill above Sibenik, Barone played a significant role in defending the city against the Turks in the 15th century. Now known for its creative jazz concerts, dances, classical music and other performances, Barone was crowned Croatia's "Best Cultural Attraction" in 2016. Next is the drive to 600-year-old St. Michael's Fortress. Standing 265 meters (869 feet) above sea level overlooking Sibenik's Old Town, the military fort features a stage for summer concerts and was awarded the Cultural Attraction of the Year in 2014. After sightseeing enjoy free time in Sibenik, before returning to the ship.
