From Shimizu, you'll travel north to Mt. Fuji, an active volcano that's been designated a "sacred place and source of artistic inspiration" and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Formed approximately 100,000 years ago, it's the tallest mountain in Japan at 3,776 meters (12,388 feet) and dominates Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Located in the foothills of Mt. Fuji stands the Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine, originally built in the early 1600s to offer protection from volcanic eruptions. A stop here offers the ideal opportunity to take photos before visiting the Mt. Fuji World Heritage Center, whose funnel-shaped structure offers a simulated experience of ascending Japan's. From the top floor, you can take in magnificent views of Mt. Fuji.
