Discover the Scandinavian heritage of Shetland. You'll leave Lerwick, the modern capital town of the Shetland Islands, for the small agricultural areas. As you travel, you'll see the distinctive black and brown Shetland sheep grazing in pastures and the delightful and inquisitive Shetland ponies that have been in Shetland since Viking times. Your first stop will be the ancient Jarlshof Ruins. The name Jarlshof means "Laird's House," referring to the community of the Norse Jarls who resided in the area in the 7th Century. You'll get to explore this multi-period settlement complex that was in use from the Bronze Age until the 17th century. Your next stop is the Hoswick visitor Centre. This interesting building used to be a weaving shed, and, in fact, there are still weaving looms and associated items on display. This is your opportunity to gain an understanding of the history and culture of Shetland.
