Board your motorcoach for a 90-minute scenic drive from Shanghai to Zhujiajiao south of the Yangtze River. Be sure to bring your camera and comfortable shoes for your guided walking tour of this ancient city. You'll travel across south China's fertile countryside, a landscape of verdant fields, rice paddies, and small villages. Located on the banks of Dianshan Lake, Zhujiajiao is connected by so many bubbling streams and crisscrossing river. Founded over 1,700 years ago, Zhujiajiao has still maintained the treasured buildings and customs of ancient China.
Spend the day on a guided walking tour exploring Zhujiajiao's historic streets and buildings including the Qing Dynasty Post Office and Tongtianhe Traditional Chinese Pharmacy. No visit to Zhujiajiao is complete without seeing the town's 36 bridges, which were built during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Each one is unique and different and made out of wood, stone or marble. One of the many sights you'll see is the famous five-arched Fangsheng Bridge, Zhujiajiao's longest, largest and tallest stone bridge. Built in 1571, a stone tablet named the Dragon Gate Stone, which is engraved with eight coiling dragons encircling a shining pearl, stands on the bridge. During your walk through Zhujiajiao, look for the many canal boats.
Next you'll walk over to a local Silk Museum, the largest silk factory in Shanghai. You'll visit the silk museum and watch how they make silk with the opportunity to browse for silk goods. After having worked up an appetite, head to a local restaurant for a family-style lunch of traditional Shanghai-style dishes.
Another scenic drive brings you back through Shanghai to your ship.
