The tour begins with a stroll down the cobbled streets of the beautiful historic center of Garachico, where we'll admire the traditional architecture as we make our way to location of the original port. During the walk, we'll learn some of the important history of Canary Wine, including how the vines were brought by the area's first settlers, the commerce "golden years" with the UK, the phylloxera plague that affected all of Europe (but not the Canaries) and the volcanic eruption that destroyed the port. Here you will have some free time to explore this nice village.
Our next destination is Bodegas Viñátigo, a family-run wine cellar where we will visit its native grapes garden and learn about their peculiarities and flavors. This winery saved many of Tenerife's native grape varieties from the brink of extinction. During its construction, it used the surrounding natural rocks to build its foundations in order to take advantage of the natural ventilation of the trade winds and gravity. We will also hear about the natural elaboration process, which uses no chemicals. Natural techniques and natural fertilizer are key for the care of the vine, which allows the grapes to pass through the bodega as naturally as possible. Following the elaboration lesson, we'll have the opportunity to enjoy a wine tasting guided by the winery's enologist.
