Description
Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.
Experience the thrill and adventure of an African Safari without traveling to Africa! That's right! Located outside your port city of San Diego is the world famous San Diego Zoo Safari Park, an expansive 1,800-acre wildlife sanctuary that is home to 3,500 animals representing more than 400 species!
Begin your full-day self-guided excursion at your pier where you will board an air-conditioned motorcoach for a scenic 45-minute drive north to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Step through the park's gates and immediately be transported to another land - one where animals wander freely in surroundings similar to their natural habitats! Lions and tigers and elephants, oh my! Divided into areas with names such as Asian Savanna, Condor Ridge, Tiger Territory, Elephant Valley, Safari Base Camp, African Plains, Lion Camp, Nairobi Village Gorilla Forest, African Woods and African Outpost - there is much to see and experience in this world of natural wonders.
And there are many ways to see it all, too! You can chose for an additional fee to take a cart, jeep or caravan. The popular guided Africa Tram Safari (included in your ticket price) is an exciting expedition that takes you around field exhibits, giving you a chance to connect with the animals on a closer level. Get a bird's-eye view of the entire Park on a tethered helium-filled balloon that rises 400 feet, offering panoramic view of lions, rhinos, giraffes, wildebeest, and gazelles, as well as the surrounding valley. (All at an additional fee). Or simply wander the lush, verdant grounds - featuring a botanical collection of 3,500 species and 1.5 million specimens - on foot. Whatever you choose, you'll surely feel like you're on an actual safari!
There are countless activities to enjoy as well. Watch elephants indulge in morning treats from the Elephant Viewing area. Stop by the Jameson Research Island outpost to see animals up close and hear real-life animal stories. For the kids, visit the Discovery Station, a playful space for animal-themed fun, or the Fisher-Price Samburu Jungle Gym, a safari-themed play area. Though you won't be allowed to pet a lion, feel free to hand-feed the colorful rainbow lorikeets at Lorikeet Landing. Or stroke the gentle deer and antelope at the Petting Kraal.
You'll want to take in some shows too (all included with park admission). Enjoy "Have You Herd," a conversation with the wise-cracking Robert the Zebra who lives in digital, animated form on a large screen. Marvel at the breathtaking sights of birds in flight at the "Frequent Flyers Bird Show."
Experience Animal Encounters, an interactive program designed to give you face-to-face contact with the Park's animal ambassadors like a cheetah, alligator and other rare and exotic animals. Interact with trainers and ask questions about the species.
As on any "real" African safari, you're likely to work up an appetite. So take time out to enjoy a meal at one of the park's many fine restaurants. Several gift shops offer souvenirs of your fascinating day. Remember, all your purchases benefit the park!
