With Mexico's border just 17 miles from San Diego, it's no wonder the city has an incredible history of Mexican-American cuisine. Discover the robust flavors that make these culinary traditions a foodie favorite on this tasty half-day Local Connections adventure. Begin with transport to the Barrio Logan neighborhood, epicenter of the city's Chicano culture. Stop is at ¡Salud! for a street-style taco and an "agua fresca," a fruity drink. This venue is a visual celebration of the Mexican car culture, and in close proximity to colorful murals that are a vivid expression of folk art. Next, head to historic Old Town, one of San Diego's premier attractions. This heritage area has an abundance of Mexican restaurants and shops that sell wonderful curios of San Diego's past. Visit Café Coyote, a perennial hot spot and discover traditional flavors in fresh-made guacamole, chimichanga, flauta and quesadilla. A local tequila expert joins tableside to share insight into the production of the iconic Mexican spirit and serve up some samples. Satiated, return to port with a camera and stomach filled with San Diego's gastronomic Mexican-American delights.
