What you will visit:
Salvador da Bahia (by private vehicle)
There is an unmistakable energy and vitality to Salvador da Bahia, the first colonial capital of Brazil and one of the oldest cities in the New World. Popular attractions include the Pelourinho, the heart of the historic district and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as the Forte de Santo Antonio da Barra, built in 1534 to defend the capital. Take in stunning vistas from Barra Lighthouse or the Lacerda Elevator with a viewing platform over the city. Visit a bevy of beautiful churches-including the Church of Our Lord of Bonfim on the Itapagipe Peninsula, the Sao Francisco Church, one of the earliest examples of baroque church architecture in Brazil, and the Cathedral of Salvador, composed of 18 columns covered in gold.
What you will see along the way:
As you travel into the heart of Salvador, you'll see a city of contrasts. Buildings from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries sit comfortably next to modern-day museums, hotels, restaurants and shops. Tucked throughout are pastel-colored homes with those famous blue Portuguese picture tiles. The beautiful Boca do Rio District, an art district, is also home to a lush coconut tree plantation, and as you make your way along the coast, enjoy the splendor of a sun-drenched shoreline, 22 miles of golden beach and deep, blue ocean.
Shopping:
The Mercado Modelo was once Salvador's commercial center but today has been completely restored. It is filled with arts and crafts, such as traditional handmade items, including Brazilian lace and embroidery, as well as other popular souvenirs.
