Departing from Civitavecchia, your adventure begins with a scenic 90-minute drive to the Eternal City of Rome.
Your guided tour begins with one of the city's most recognized landmarks, the Spanish Steps. With its unique butterfly design, the Piazza di Spagna is Rome's most beautiful stairway, designed in classic Roman Baroque style. At the foot of the stairs, you will find the famous Barcaccia Fountain, the work of Pietro Bernini and his son, Gian Lorenzo.
Your experience continues with a scenic walk to the beautiful Trevi Fountain. You'll stroll through the narrow streets, leading to a small, almost hidden piazza, which unexpectedly reveals this extraordinary landmark. Be sure to have coins in your pocket to partake in the romantic custom of tossing a coin into Rome's most famous fountain. Blue-green clear water cascades over the ornate Baroque stone figures of Trevi, making it a sight to behold and a memorable photograph for your scrapbook.
Continue your walk to the Pantheon, one of the most recognized and oldest monuments in the Eternal City and a truly awe-inspiring look back in history. Built more than 1800 years ago, the magnificent Pantheon stands as a reminder of the great Roman Empire. With its thick brick walls and large marble columns, the Pantheon makes an immediate impression on visitors.
The juxtaposition of old and new is evident in The Piazza Navona, a short walk west of the Pantheon. It is one of Rome's liveliest squares, with many outdoor cafes, restaurants and street performers. Three distinct fountains dominate the piazza, including the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi - the Four Rivers Fountain, the masterwork of Bernini.
After a morning of seeing the sights, a relaxing lunch with a glass of wine awaits you at a local Italian hotel/restaurant. This welcomed respite offers the opportunity to savor local cuisine and décor.
Refreshed, you will walk to the magnificent St. Peter's Square. Striking in scale, with an imposing colonnade, it leads to the greatest symbol of the Christian world, St. Peter's Basilica. The grand, elliptical St. Peter's Square (Piazza San Pietro) was designed by Bernini and built between 1656 and 1667. Framing the Basilica's entrance, this world-famous site is rich in religious and historical significance. ENJOY free time at St. Peter's Square to visit the landmark on your own or to shop and browse at leisure.
At the end of the day, you will travel back to Civitavecchia by motorcoach, sharing observations and favorite moments with your fellow travelers as you return to the ship.
