Description
Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.
Your tour begins as you board your motorcoach for the scenic drive through the intriguing interior of Iceland. With the daylight roughly 20 hours each day (June, July & August), there's even more to see. After riding through Reykjavík - you'll travel through an unspoiled landscape dotted with incredible displays of wild flowers, grassy lowlands, bogs and marshes.
As you approach the small town of Eyrarbakki you may be able to see Hekla, the country's largest volcano, off in the distance. You'll continue on to Stokkseyri, a coastal town famous for its black sandy beach and museum dedicated to Iceland's ghosts, elves and trolls. Stokkseyri was settled around 900 A.D. by the Viking explorer Hásteinn Atlason and has had a long history as a fishing and trading village.
Once you arrive, you'll disembark at a local restaurant that specializes in Icelandic langoustine (small lobster tails) plucked fresh from the ocean. (There is nothing more Icelandic than a seafood restaurant in a typical fishing village.) Sit down and enjoy a scrumptious feast of Icelandic langoustine, cucumbers, salad, couscous, and grilled potatoes.
After lunch, you'll drive along the coast to Lake Kleifarvatn. The barren, moonscape surroundings are uniquely beautiful and fascinating. After a brief photo stop, you'll continue to the lake's southern end for a walk near Krýsuvík, a geothermal area. If you look closely, you can see powerful jets of steam escaping from beneath the earth's crust and sulfurous gases rising from numerous vents. The area has experienced a number of geological events over the last few thousand years due to the shifting of the North American and European continental plates. In the middle is a 'hot spot,' where you'll see pools of boiling mud.
On your way back, travel through Reykjavík before returning to the pier.
