Soak up New Britain's mesmerizing north coast during this incredible half-day adventure that starts with a scenic trip through Rabaul, which was smothered by ash during a massive volcanic eruption in 1994. Travel along the slopes of Tovanumbatir, one of eight active vents in the Rabaul caldera, to reach the Volcanolagical Observatory, which closely monitors 14 active and 23 dormant volcanoes. Marvel at awe-inspiring views of Simpson Harbor and the island's mountainous skyline. Journey to Mount Tavurvur, which violently erupted in 1937 and 1994, to snap pictures of the "bubbling beach," natural springs heated to a boil by an underwater volcanic vent. Nearby, visit a Tolai village whose inhabitants have adapted to life near an active volcano. Travel to Rabaul Airport, which the '94 eruption destroyed, to view Japanese warplanes half-buried in ash, a testament to the power of the eruption, then relax during a picturesque journey back to port.
