Steeped in history and enrobed in breathtaking views, Hvalsey was the last place in Greenland to be inhabited by the Vikings. Situated below Qaqortoq Peak, it was first settled around 1300 A.D. Mysteriously abandoned a century later, all that remains of the once thriving village is the church and remnants of a farm. Your tour begins when you board a boat at the Qaqortoq marina and motor across the fjord past Arpatsivik Island. Standing on deck, you may feel like a Viking yourself as you look out over scenery that has remained unchanged for thousands of years. Once on shore, you will have free time to the ruins of the 14th century church. Measuring 52-feet-long and 26-feet-wide, the church is the most extensive and best preserved Norse ruins in Greenland. Take the time to sit close to the stone walls and imagine Arctic life when Greenland really was green.

Special Notes:

This tour is not guided. You will have some free time when you arrive in Hvalsey to explore independantly. Wear sturdy, non-skid walking shoes. The level of experience varies in Qaqortoq due to the remoteness of its location. Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here, and you are trading breadth of experience for authentic interaction. Please bring your spirit of adventure and bear with any language difficulties your guide may encounter and with any operational surprises that may crop up. There are no restrooms available on tour.
