Founded in the 4th century, Guimaraes became Portugal's first capital in the 12th century. Its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, noted as 'an extremely well-preserved and an authentic example of the evolution of a medieval settlement.' Once in the city, the drive takes you past the Castle of Guimaraes. Built in the 10th century to defend the monastery from attacks by the Moors and Norsemen, it's considered one of the finest castles in Portugal and a National Monument. Your first stop is the 15th century Palace of the Dukes of Braganza for a tour of its museum and art gallery, which holds portraits, tapestries, fine furniture and porcelain. Back on the coach, you'll continue to Old Town for a walking tour past a manor house and a 10th century church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Enjoy free time to browse the shops, or relax in the square.
