For centuries, the faithful have followed the pilgrimage route to Braga. Situated about 45 minutes north of Porto, it's often called the 'Portuguese Rome' for its many churches. First on the itinerary is Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary. Built in the 18th century on the slopes of Mount Espinho, the church has an impressive Baroque stairway, zigzagging 381 feet up the hillside. The Sanctuary houses chapels decorated with terracotta sculptures depicting the Passion of Christ. Around the chapels are four Baroque fountains with statues of the Evangelists, which also date back to the 18th century.
