From 1849 to 1923, indentured laborers from India passed through this immigration depot; today, 68% of Mauritius's current total population is of Indian ancestry. Then, you're off to Chinatown. Founded in the 1740s, the area is known for its shops and restaurants. A stop at the Sockalingum Meenatchee Amman Kovil temple offers a look at the deeply rooted Hindu faith of the island's Indian immigrants. Of course, one of the joys of foreign travel is tasting a new cuisine and the island's melting-pot status is reflected in the food served at a local restaurant.
