Discover Otaru with a local guide whose knowledge and fascinating details adds to your experience. Your first stop is the Shin-Nantaru Market; mingle with shoppers as you peruse stalls selling fish, fruits, vegetables, etc. Next on the itinerary is the Sumiyoshi Shrine. A walk through the torii gates reveals a bronze statue dedicated to Shima Yoshitake who helped unify Hokkaido in the 19th century. Learn how Otaru's booming herring fishing industry led to beautiful homes dubbed "herring mansions." One of the most extravagant is the Aoyama Villa, a luxurious home featuring a dining room that seats 300 people, exquisitely lacquered floors, and rooms built in rosewood and Japanese cedar. After a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, enjoy the panoramic views from the Otaru Tenguyama Ropeway. Finally, enjoy free time at the Canal District before returning to the ship.
Special Notes:
Comfortable, flat walking shoes are recommended. Japanese Yen is required for additional purchases. There is a walk of approximately 10 minutes to the parking area from Otaru Canal and a further 10 minutes to the Sumiyoshi Shrine, as well as approx. 100 steps to negotiate. There are some steps to negotiate at the Aoyama Villa and guests will be required to remove their shoes. The order of visits may vary. This tour is not recommended for passengers with walking difficulties. Tenguyama Ropeway will not operate on bad weather conditions. On Wednesdays, Shin-Nantaru Market is closed and a visit to Nantaru Market will substitute.Details
