WHAT YOU VISIT
Seifa Utaki
Perhaps the most sacred site in Okinawa, Seifa Utaki means "purified place of Utaki." According to ancient texts, the goddess Amamikyu came here, gave birth, and her descendants populated the islands. A place of natural wonders, the UNESCO World Heritage Site features ceremonial altars that were created from the natural stone outcroppings and dirt and stone pathways that wind through the forests and clearings. Stalactites drip "holy water" into pots once used to tell fortunes. This has been a sacred site since the earliest period of Okinawan history, and people still come here to pray and meditate, so please be respectful as you explore this special place.
Gangala Valley
The island has an alluring network of caves and forests and the Gangala Valley was formed when a limestone cavern collapsed thousands of years ago. This underground world is a subtropical paradise of banyan trees and caves with geologic rock formations. Once you arrive, you can stop and sip coffee underneath some impressive stalactites and follow your nature guide who will share his knowledge of this unusual forested park during a hike.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
While hiking through the Gangala Valley, be sure to capture the image of the Ufushu Gajimaru tree, estimated to be more than 150 years old. A banyan tree, its roots have created large "pillars" that once delineated a sheltered place for prayer and communal gatherings.
