Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.
Norfolk's maritime and naval heritage dates back 380 years. From its days as a prosperous shipbuilding center in 1775 to its 21st century home of the world's largest naval base, Norfolk is a city that's proud of its military past and present. Get to know this city's legacy during this four and a half hour excursion that takes you on a scenic tour around the city and onto Norfolk Naval Station before venturing on to a tour of the MacArthur Memorial. (In order to gain entrance to the naval base, you must have a government issued picture ID. No bags other than purses or camera bags are allowed on the transportation.)
After boarding, it's just a leisurely drive to the naval base. Along the way, you have a comfortable view of the city's attractions such as Nauticus, the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, and the Battleship U.S.S. Wisconsin, a salute to the city's long-standing relationship with the Navy.
You'll continue on to Sewell's Point peninsula, site of Naval Station Norfolk, for a one-hour tour of this amazing 4,300-acre installation. As the world's largest naval station, the base supports 75 ships, 134 aircraft carriers, 11 aircraft hangars and 13 piers. During your tour you may get to see any number of cruisers, destroyers, submarines, supply ships, airplanes and helicopters. Air Operations conducts an average of 275 flights per day – that's one every six minutes.
Your next destination is the MacArthur Memorial Museum in downtown Norfolk. En route, you'll pass by historic homes and churches and beautiful neighborhoods. As you move along, be sure to look out for the city's popular logo, an elegant young mermaid, a symbol of Norfolk's maritime and naval roots. Located in Norfolk's restored 1850 city hall, the MacArthur Memorial traces the life and military career of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur and honors those who have served in the U.S. Forces. After you disembark you'll enter the rotunda and view the tombs of General MacArthur and his wife, Jean. Then, you'll proceed through the galleries that showcase military artifacts, photographs, documents and personal memorabilia including his trademark cap, sunglasses and corncob pipe.
In lieu of returning to your ship you have the option of shopping at MacArthur Center, a world class mall featuring 150 specialty stores and restaurants. From here, you can walk back to port or wait for another transportation.
