See New Plymouth from a local's point-of-view with a tour that showcases some of the city's fascinating history and landmarks. Once in downtown, you'll follow your guide whose knowledge and fascinating details adds to your experience. Just over a mile long, the gentle strolling pace allows time to get acquainted with the city and to take photos. As you walk along, you'll discover that Taranaki's largest city was originally called Ngamotu (the islands) and occupied by the Maori for centuries. When the first British settlers arrived in 1841, the site was chosen because of its fertile land, gentle terrain and sheltered beach, and named "New" Plymouth. Hear their stories of hope and anguish, struggle and triumph and how a bush-clad shoreline was transformed into a bustling community. Following the approximate two-hour walk, you can return to the ship to plan your next adventure.
