What you will visit:
Nassau
Nassau is the capital city of the Bahamas and is famous for its spectacular beaches and strong British influence in its architecture and local flavor. Vehicles drive on the left side of the road, and at the Government House, there is a Changing of the Guard ceremony reminiscent of Buckingham Palace.
Paradise Island
Formerly known as Hog Island, Paradise Island is best known for the lavish Atlantis Hotel Resort & Casino. The architecture of this mega-complex incorporates pre-Columbian, ancient Greek and Roman facades as well as a life-size replica of an ancient Mayan Temple.
What you will see along the way:
As you enjoy a comprehensive drive through Nassau and Paradise Island, you'll be treated to a wide variety of historic and modern sights. See the Parliament Buildings in historic Rawson Square, Nassau Rum Cake Factory, Atlantis Royal Towers and Potters Cay Fish Market. Then, make a stop at the Queen's Staircase and Fort Fincastle. View Graycliff Restaurant, the National Art Gallery, John Watling's Rum Distillery and the Straw Market for Bahamian souvenirs.
Photo Opportunity:
You'll fill your camera on this tour but don't miss the chance to photograph the Queen's Staircase, a 102-foot, 65-step, hand carved, limestone set of steps built by 18th-century slaves.
Snacks:
Sip and savor your way through the day, stopping at a variety of local venues to sample their specialties. At the Nassau Rum Cake Factory, pause for a free sample. At John Watling's Rum Distillery, enjoy a free piña colada sample. A local foodie favorite is the Fish Fry, where you'll watch a conch salad presentation followed by a tasting and a tropical Bahama Mama drink sample. If you're still hungry, tuck into something special at Twin Brothers restaurant.
Shopping:
At the Straw Market, shop for fun and colorful Bahamian mementos, crafts and gifts. Popular souvenirs include hand-woven straw hats, bags and mats, adorable dolls, conch shell jewelry, and unique wood carvings. The prices are reasonable, and you can do a little negotiating.
