Enjoy a fascinating overview of Pompeii in a half-day format. Board your wheelchair accessible vehicle at the pier for the 30-minute drive to the ruins of Pompeii, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The eruption of Vesuvius was a monumental natural disaster that killed thousands and entombed the city yet preserved a moment in time from almost 2,000 years ago. Once at the ruins, discover the archaeological excavations of a lost city buried deep beneath the ash from Mt. Vesuvius. Your guide will point out the preserved remains that hint at daily Roman life, their customs, buildings and cuisine, and how they entertained and lived. See stunning frescoes and elaborately detailed mosaic-inlaid floors that decorated the interiors of wealthy homeowners' villas. You'll even view the plaster casts that mark the positions of the fallen that were swiftly entombed by volcanic ash. Afterward, visit a cameo factory to shop for intricately carved seashell or coral jewelry. Relax on the drive back to port.
