Dubbed the "Art Deco City," Napier was redesigned in the art deco style after a devastating earthquake destroyed the city in 1931. Within a remarkable two-year period, 111 new buildings were constructed in the downtown area in the contemporary style of the times: art deco. The style, which originated in Europe in the early 20th century, highlights the optimism and idealism of the Roaring '20s. It is noted for its pastel-colored structures marked by geometric lines and patterns and streamlined and sophisticated aerodynamic shapes created with glass and metal construction. Travel through the Marewa District, noted for its many art deco homes and its superb foliage

What you will see along the way:
Gaze out the window on your Napier-orientation city motorcoach tour and see why Napier is heralded as the "Art Deco City." Napier was rebuilt in the early 1930s following a major earthquake. The new buildings reflect the style of the times: stripped classical, Spanish mission, art deco, and some incorporated, unique Maori motifs. Your route takes you to the Napier seashore along the Marine Parade, past sunken gardens and the Spirit of Napier sculpture, and continues through Napier's suburbs for views of the city, Hawke's Bay and the Marewa District, noted for its art deco homes and its superb vegetation.

At tour's conclusion you may opt to remain in town for additional sightseeing and shopping on your own. Passengers should confirm timing and location of shuttle for the return to port.
