The vibrant capital of Uruguay, Montevideo is one of the continent's most significant trading ports and is a wonderful place to soak up local color and cuisine. Your half-day adventure begins with a visit to Montevideo's former agricultural market (MAM). Built between 1905 and 1915 and recently refurbished, this area was significant in the 19th century as the place where most agricultural and other products were bought and sold. Today, it is perfect for showcasing local handicrafts, spices, delicacies and nibbles. Continue to one of Montevideo's most emblematic venues, Bar Facal, one of the oldest bars in the city. Here, delight in a tango performance every day at noon, enjoy two different samples of local wine, and tuck into a traditional lunch. You can also try Uruguay's specialty beverage used in religious rituals. Continue on to Independence Square for a photo stop and finally Port Market, where the smoke from authentic Uruguayan parrillas (grills) wafts through the air. Return to port.
Special Notes:
If for any reason access to any of the visited venues is not possible, the alternative would be a visit to the Artigas Mausoleum, where Uruguay's National Hero's ashes can be found. Please note: Tour not available on Holidays: 25 Dec and 01 Jan.
