This whirlwind tour of Matsuyama traverses the city and takes in many of its highlights with visits to its most engaging sites. First, a motorcoach takes you to Dogo Onsen. With a history stretching back over 1,000 years, Dogo Onsen is the oldest and most famous hot spring in the country. Back on the coach, you'll tour Ishiteji Temple, a sprawling Buddhist compound that sits on the 1,100-year-old Shikoku Pilgrimage Route. Your final stop is a visit to Matsuyama Castle. Located atop 433-foot-tall Mt. Katsuyama, the 17th century castle was once the power seat for the Matsudaira Clan, who ruled this area during the Edo period. Enclosed by four gates and stone walls, the donjon is an Important Cultural Property. After arriving by cable car, you'll need to take off your shoes before stepping inside and viewing displays of swords, armor and other items that belonged to the Matsudaira family.
