This wonderful exploration of one of France's most loved regions, starts when you meet your driver and guide ship-side for a drive through colorful Provence. Journey along Durance River, to historic Avignon, passing vineyards, orchards, and olive and cypress trees. Join your guide for a walk around the Palace of the Popes, which stands proud in the heart of Avignon. This abandoned, fortified palace became the residence of nine popes from 1309 to 1378 during their exile from Rome. Their time here became known as the Great Schism and their palace remains one of the largest medieval Gothic buildings in France. Stroll the galleries, chambers and chapels with their grand arches before walking to the old town to view the historic arched Pont d'Avignon bridge, which dates back to 1171. Enjoy a traditional Provencal lunch with wine, before browsing the shops for souvenirs.
