WHAT YOU WILL VISIT:
Amanohashidate
The long and narrow spit known as Amanohashidate, or 'Bridge of Heaven,' is one of Japan's top-three scenic views on what is considered one of the most beautiful bays in the world. The two-mile-long stretch is rimmed by sand and covered in thousands of fragrant pine trees. It can best be explored on foot or by bicycle. Legend has it Amanohashidate was created by the gods as a bridge between heaven and Earth when they were creating the islands of Japan.
Motoise Kono Shrine
Located near the northern end of the Amanohashidate Sandbar, this important spot enshrined both a local goddess of agriculture as well as the venerated Shinto deity Amaterasu, or sun goddess. Built using the oldest architectural style known in Japan, the shrine shares similar features to the shrine at Ise, with its roof logs and decorated railings. Motoise Konojinja is also known for the calming peal of the suikinkutsu, a garden ornament that reverberates from the impact of water droplets.
Kasamatsu Park by cable car
A cable car whisks visitors to an observation overlook, the perfect vantage point for taking in the beauty of Amanohashidate. From this spot, turn your back to the sandbar and bend over to look at it from between your legs. It looks like a bridge leading right to heaven.
Ine Bay Cruise
Take in beautiful views and the historic 'funaya' (traditional fishermen's houses that surround Ine Bay) on a 30-minute sightseeing cruise.
Ine Town Stroll (inside funaya)
One of the most iconic sights in Japan, a stroll through Ine Town is a true step back in time. Here, you'll admire 230 funaya, traditional boathouses used by generations of local fishermen. Step inside and marvel as the ground floor opens to the water while the second floor contains living quarters.
WHAT YOU WILL SEE ALONG THE WAY:
Offering spectacular scenic views of the Maizuru Bay and harbor, the pretty seaside town of Maizuru, located on an inlet of the Sea of Japan, is filled with fascinating history and local sights. Officially founded in 1943, its modern development really began in 1904-05 during the Russo-Japanese War. Your 120-minute drive takes you through the countryside to Kyoto.
LUNCH:
Relax in a local restaurant where a Japanese set menu is served.
