Journey to the seaside village of Porto da Cruz for a walk along the Levada da Referta and discover the unspoiled treasures of the island's northeast side. As you follow your guide off the beaten trail, notice how local farmers have mastered the art of farming in this rugged terrain with age-old practices such as the levadas, recognized by UNESCO for its ingenious system of canals and aqueducts built between the 15th and 20th centuries to transport water from the mountains to the island's agricultural area. During your walk, you'll see vegetable and fruit farms, with breathtaking views of the North Sea and the Penha d'Águia rock formation, which rises 590 meters (1,935 feet) above sea level. Then, cool off with a glass of poncha, a delightful concoction of rum, lemon juice, and honey at a local bar before returning to the pier.
Special Notes:
Guests must be in good physical condition to participate. The duration of the walk is approximately 2 ½ hours over rough and uneven ground. In the interests of safety, this excursion may be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions or changes of status in the Levada or paths used. The terrain varies from flat to uneven, to cobble stones. Trails may be slippery.
We recommend guests wear proper non-slip boots or walking shoes with a good grip (never sandals or flip-flops); an all-weather jacket is a perfect choice for the walks, and clothes appropriate to the weather since Madeira has a microclimate. A walking stick can be suitable and useful for some of our guests to feel more confident. Avoid walking over the metal grids frequently found on levadas.
