Description

Board your motorcoach and travel through Longyearbyen. Named after American mining engineer William Longyear, this town of some 2100 people is the administrative center of the Svalbard archipelago. This small yet colourful town is fileld with history and scenic spots, and your local guide will share local stories and highlights with you.
Visit the Svalbard Museum, which is part of the Svalbard Science Center. The exhibits range from the history of the Svalbard Archipelago to its natural resources. Originally a major coal mining center, the Svalbard Archipelago is today a major travel destination as well as an important research center.
Continue to Adventsdalen, a seeming barren plain 19 miles long that follows Adventdalselva. On the south side of the valley are several closed mines. In summer, wild flowers pop up throughout the valley. Your destination is Camp Barentz, located literally at the end of the road in Advent Valley. Here, amongst the traditional buildings, the hosts will welcome you in. The musher/dog driver will tell you about dog sledding, and the life of the happy huskies and their caretakers. Then, you'll have time to say hello to the dogs, before being welcomed into the 'Gamme', a traditional round Northern Norwegian building. Here you will be treated to Norwegian waffles and coffee, whilst the host shares a great presentation about the King of the Arctic - the Polar bear. All too soon it will be time to return to the ship, full of new experiences - and waffles!
