Discover the beauty of the Lofoten Islands, where glaciers and other forces of nature have sculptured granite mountains, green meadows and chalky white beaches all under the majestic glow of summer's midnight sun.
Your adventure begins at the Gravdal pier where you'll travel through the spectacular countryside and under the sea through the Nappstraumen tunnel to the western end of Flakstadøy Island. We continue towards Reine, which is one of the most idyllic and best preserved fishing villages in the Lofoten. Reine has been a commercial centre since 1743. Today tourism is important, and despite its remote location and its low population (307 inhabitants), many thousands of people visit annually. The largest weekly magazine in Norway, Allers, selected Reine as the most beautiful village in Norway in the late 1970s.
Your next destination lies just outside the tiny hamlet of Ramberg. Nestled on Flakstad Bay, the idyllic Flakstad Church was erected in 1780 on the same site as the original church in the Middle Ages. Built with woods imported from Russia, the church is an example of a cruciform design, or the shape of a cross.
Then, you'll travel to the charming fishing village of Sund for a tour of the local museum that showcases the area's fishing history. Among the exhibits of boats, tools, and utensils used by fishermen is an engaging demonstration by the museum's blacksmith. Famous for his wrought iron sculptures of Norway's cormorant, a large black and white seabird, the smithy's work is available for purchase in the gift shop.
After the museum tour, a lunch will be served in one of the historical boathouses before returning to your ship in Gravdal.
