Picturesque Pontremoli is a quiet village off the beaten path. While it may be out-of-the-way, it's over-the-top in history and architectural treasures. When you arrive, you'll board a little train that will take you into the main historical center. Once you disembark, you'll think you've stepped back into the Middle Ages as you walk along the 13th century walls that divide Pontremoli anchored by the 118-foot-high great bell tower erected in 1322. The adjacent Piazza del Duomo is dominated by the majestic marble facade of the Cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, the Virgin Mary.
Step into Palazzo Magnavacca and enjoy a singer performance in one of the Halls of the Palace.
Enjoy an outside visit to the impressive 10th century Castello del Piagnaro, which sits uphill from the center of town. Before you return to La Spezia, you'll be treated to a taste of Tuscany with a stop at a local venue for local delicacies and free time to browse for souvenirs.
