Discover Kyoto's unspoiled treasures that stand as silent tributes to its sacred past. From Kobe, sit back and enjoy a narrated drive to your first destination, the Fushimi Inari Shrine. Built in 711, it's most famous for the 10,000 brilliant red gates that arch over a pathway leading through a forest and up to a hilltop overlooking Kyoto. Lunch beckons next followed by a visit to the Ryoanji Temple. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 15th century temple is noted for its tranquil Zen rock garden. Your final destination is Sanjusangendo Temple. Officially Rengeo-in, was established by Taira no Kiyomori in 1164. The 120-meter hall, the longest in Japan, is named for its 33 intervals between columns. Inside, there are 1,000 standing Kannon statues, centered around a seated Kannon, all designated as national treasures.
