Tucked away in one of the most beautiful places in the Plokstine forest is an eerie reminder of the Soviet Union and the superpowers' race for nuclear supremacy. Your full-day adventure brings you to both this historic sight and the Zemaitija National Park for an interesting day of stark contrasts. Built under great secrecy in 1960, the area, which housed the missiles deployed to Cuba in 1962 launching the Cuban Missile Crisis, was decommissioned after the breakup of the Soviet Union. You'll have the opportunity to wander the underground tunnels and marvel at the empty 100-foot-deep silos now open to the public. In complete contrast to this apocalyptic site, you'll delight in the pristine natural beauty of Zemaitija National Park. Gaze upon the peaceful waters of crystalline Plateliai Lake, where four spectacular islands provide an abundant wildlife habitat. Conclude with lunch of 'cepelinai,' meat-stuffed potato dumplings, in a traditional Lithuanian pub. Return to port.
