This relaxed, 3.5-hour adventure offers an excellent overview of Klaipeda's highlights and Soviet history with the added sparkle of learning more about its extensive history of Baltic amber. Begin with a comprehensive drive through central Klaipeda to view the Clock and Watch Museum, the neo-Gothic post office, parkland sculptures, and the Soviet WWII memorial and military barracks that are now Klaipeda University. Travel south of the city for the typical residential areas built in Soviet times. Next, at the amber processing factory, you'll meet the craftsmen who, through a process of cutting, carving and baking, turn the resin into works of art. Then, head to Klaipeda's Old Town to peruse amber antiques and take a taste herbal tea or strong amber drink. Stroll through the narrow streets of this heritage enclave and visit Theatre Square and its symbol dedicated to romantic love-the sculpture of 'Annchen von Tharau.' Shop for traditional Lithuanian souvenirs before returning to port.
