Prepare to enjoy some of Kauai's most legendary sights and sounds via river and road. This active full-day excursion with lunch combines geological wonders, lush vegetation, small towns and even showcases Hawaiian music and dance.

Board your air conditioned motorcoach for the approximately two hour drive to Waimea Canyon. You pass through Lihue, the island's main town, and the small towns of Oma'o, Kalaheo and Hanapepe en route to Waimea, where you head inland, driving up the canyon to its rim.

Stand in awe before the beauty that is spread out before you. You'll soon learn why Mark Twain dubbed this natural wonder as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." View the canyon from a lookout 3,400 feet above the canyon's floor and admire how the dramatic red and brown volcanic slopes contrast with the lush green vegetation.

On the road again, you'll sightsee to many of the island's must-see attractions. At Spouting Horn, hear the timeless Hawaiian legends about an angry lizard goddess called Kaikapu. Imprisoned in a submerged lava tube by a resourceful fisherman, the loud sound made by the blowhole is said to be her angry roar.

After enjoying a delightful buffet lunch, served at a local restaurant, your tour continues as you drive through Koloa, where the first successful sugar plantation was started. Next, a stop at Opaekaa Falls allows you to capture memorable photographs of this dramatic 40-foot waterfall framed by the Makaleha Mountains.

Your next adventure will be aboard a riverboat cruise up the famed Wailua River, home of the Fern Grotto. This trip is ideal for those who want to learn more about Hawaiian music and the traditional dance of the Hula. Also, if romance is your thing, you'll love the live performance of the "Hawaiian Wedding Song."

On your way back to the ship, reflect on some of the other intriguing places you have experienced during this comprehensive tour like the island's many small towns and beautiful attractions.

Special Notes:

Wear comfortable, sturdy walking or hiking shoes. Guests must be able to negotiate a few steps on the boat. Insect repellent is recommended. On Christmas Day a boxed lunch will be substituted for the buffet as the restaurant is closed.

Paths around the Fern Grotto might be slippery. No inside visit to the Grotto is permitted.

The stop at Opaekaa Falls is time permitting; the stop may not be made on all tours or by all buses.
