Enjoy a blend of the traditional and the ancient. After a 30-minute drive from the harbor in your motorcoach, you'll arrive in Katakolon, your gateway to Olympia. You'll visit the Olympia Archaeological Museum with artifacts from the Temple of Zeus, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Also on display are Hermes of Praxiteles, the Winged Victory of Palonios - the figure inscribed on all the 2004 Olympic medals - and a helmet inscribed "Militiades," the name of the commander whose forces defeated the Persians at Marathon. Your tour takes a musical twist with a visit a local taverna in modern Olympia. Enjoy a snack from the buffet of local delicacies and sip on wine or ouzo, an anise-flavored aperitif, while you enjoy a performance of traditional folk music and dance. Feel free to accept the invitation of the dancers to join in, Greek-family style.
Special Notes:
In order to protect the historic environment, local regulations require motorcoaches to park approximately 1,200 yards from the exit of the Olympia Museum. The walking required is mostly flat and even.There is a short flight of approximately seven stairs to enter the entertainment venue. Passengers with limited mobility should take this into consideration.
Depending on parking, passengers may be asked to cross a bridge with 25 steps in order to reach the Archeological Museum.
Wear comfortable walking shoes.
Flash photography is not allowed in the museum.
