The Byzantine era began when Constantine chose the city formerly known as Byzantium as Rome's new capital in 330. Then, during the Crusades, the Sultan Mehmet waged a mighty assault on Constantinople and 1453 marked the beginning of the Ottomans. Visit two exquisite examples of architecture marvels each empire left behind during this exciting half-day tour. First on the itinerary is the 17th century Blue Mosque, a triumph of harmony, proportion, elegance and the only mosque in the world with six minarets. The blue in the name stems from the famed Iznik tiles, which line the walls. Next, is the Underground Cistern. Built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian in the 6th century to supply water to the nearby palace complex, it's the largest and the most magnificent covered cistern in Istanbul. Supported by 336 Corinthian columns, the dramatic ceiling is made of brick and is cross-vaulted.
