WHAT YOU WILL VISIT:
Chuson-ji Temple
This elaborate complex is a UNESCO world heritage site and the most famous site in the Hiraizumi area. Founded in 850, the temple flourished during the Fujiwara era in the early 12th century. Once the site over forty halls and pagodas, the temple was largely destroyed in 1189 though the stunning Konjikido was spared. Housed within exterior the walls this glorious structure is covered in gold leaf, shell inlay and elaborate paintings. The grounds also feature a teahouse, an open-air stage and the Sankozo museum, home to some 3000 artifacts.
WHAT YOU WILL SEE ALONG THE WAY:
As you drive into Hiraizumi admire rural landscapes and remnants of historical Japan. The arrival to Chūson-ji is a visual experience in itself. Dense forests line the long driveway that travels up a steep hill to the expansive temple grounds.
Lunch:
After your 2-hour drive, refresh with a traditional lunch served in a local restaurant.
Special Notes:
The drive to Hiraizumi will be 2-hours long (there will be a 15-minute break each way).Much of the walking at Hiraizumi is on bare uneven ground of mountain area; this tour is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties.
Some part of Chūson-ji is under construction.
Japanese Yen is required for additional purchases.
At Chunsonji temple, Memorial Service for Great East Japan Earthquake will be specially arranged for Diamond Princess guests on this excursion.
