Discover the mysteries of Georges Island, a National Historic Site, on a fascinating three-hour adventure that begins with a stroll along the Halifax boardwalk to a waiting ferry. Enigmatic Georges Island is a hidden gem within Halifax Harbour. For centuries it has been shrouded in a rich tapestry of history and folklore and for nearly 200 years played a pivotal role in military activities. Georges Island is also home to one of Canada's oldest lighthouses, originally constructed in 1876. In 1749, when British settlers founded Halifax, the island's strategic importance surged as the harbor's safeguard against potential threats. The star-shaped Fort Charlotte, a remarkable structure can still be explored today. Upon arrival, you'll wander through its fortifications, including its defensive walls, Martello tower, lighthouse, labyrinth of tunnels, and underground quarters, as your guide shares tales of adventure and intrigue.
